My Weight Loss Story

My Weight Loss StoryI’ve been overweight for most of my life. Not when I was a little kid, mind you – I was skinny as a rail before I started going to school. But after that, it changed.

I was never grossly overweight as a child, but I became borderline obese as a teenager when I first broke the 200 pound mark.

Weight Loss Never Lasted Long

Of course the family doctor tried to get me to lose weight. He kept recommending a 1000 calorie diet, which I could never even come close to following. So I tried a number of the fad diets of the day, too – the Grapefruit Diet, the Scarsdale Diet, and I can’t even remember what else.

I even had some moderate success dropping pounds with them, but of course all the weight came back soon after dieting stopped.

Such is the story of my life, and I’m now in my 50s.

I kept away from scales for decades, but I was aware that my pant size kept slowly inching itself upward. My weight went up and down a bit, but it went up more than it ever went down.

I recently returned to my hometown in Canada. In customary fashion, my body encouraged me to squirrel away the nuts and berries as winter approached. Of course most of the nuts and berries were in the form of pies, ice cream and the numerous delicious sweets that my mother bakes.

As winter passed and spring began arriving, I began feeling larger and more bloated, almost as if I was going to explode. Even my “fat clothes” were becoming tight. I thought to myself, “If I don’t do something about this soon, where will I be another year from now?”

So I broke down and weighed myself. And I almost broke the scale… it stopped at 250 pounds and with my shoes, clothes and heavy leather jacket on (I was browsing in a thrift store at the time) I weighed over 260. The scale made a horrifying sound as it slammed against its limits under the burden of all of me… and that was my “Aha!” moment.

Time to lose weight. A lot of weight.

And I decided to keep track of my weight loss journey here for you.

Wish me luck! Here’s to losing all that extra weight for good!
